Dr. Terry Wahls is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa within the Department of Internal Medicine. She is also a patient with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, which confined her to a tilt-recline wheelchair for four years. Dr. Wahls restored her health using a diet and lifestyle program she designed specifically for her brain. She is the author of The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine, The Wahls Protocol: A Radical New Way to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions Using Paleo Principles, and the cookbook The Wahls Protocol Cooking for Life: The Revolutionary Modern Paleo Plan to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions.
The Wahls research team conducts clinical trials that test the effects of nutrition and lifestyle interventions to treat MS, and through her research and developing the Wahls Protocol, she has helped thousands of individuals around the world reverse or stop the progression of their diseases.
Proceeds from this event will be directed to the Dr. Terry Wahls Research Fund at the University of Iowa Center for Advancement. Your support for research efforts at the University of Iowa make it possible for the Wahls research team to conduct basic science studies which help understand the mechanisms of why the intervention of the Wahls Protocol is so effective. Private support has made this research possible.
Get Involved in a Clinical Trial
We encourage you to take part in a clinical trial. For many, being in a clinical trial provides additional motivation to make and sustain dietary improvements. Having one family member in a diet study often helps the whole family improve their diet. Consider being in one of our upcoming trials today. Being in a clinical trial motivates us to improve other health behaviors. We do more exercise. We pay attention to our sleep and stress management strategies. It often helps the whole family take better care of themselves. Look over the list of trials and join a study today.
Relapsing-remitting MS patients
Dr. Wahls has included an element of time restricted eating (TRE) in our clinical trial “Efficacy of Diet on Quality of Life in Multiple Sclerosis (NCT05007483).” We need people with relapsing-remitting MS, between the ages of 18 and 70, who are willing to be randomized to one of three diets: time restricted olive oil ketogenic, modified Paleolithic or usual diet. It is important to have a comparison group or a control arm, in this case the usual diet arm. Learn more about the study here.
You also can join our patient database to be notified about future research opportunities by completing this brief survey. We also periodically conduct survey-only based studies which do not require in-person visits. We would love to include you in our in our database so you can learn about our future studies.
Two New Populations for a Study of an Online Wellness Program
While the study of MS patients is complete, we have added three new populations to our online wellness program study (NCT05057676). We are looking for people with fibromyalgia, post-acute sequela of COVID 19 (also known as long COVID). This study evaluates whether access to an online wellness course leads to reduced symptoms and improved quality of life in these two conditions. You must be an adult and live in North America to participate in this online-only study.
Fibromyalgia Patients: If you have fibromyalgia, complete this survey to see if you are eligible to participate.
Post-acute sequela of COVID-19 Patients: If you have post-acute sequela of COVID-19, complete this survey to see if you are eligible to participate.
Changing the Standard of Care
Help us change the standard of care for people with chronic disease so they will be told that improving diet and other wellness behaviors are important parts of managing their illness. We need people like you to participate in a clinical trial to build the evidence that changing what we eat and improving our self-care routines can impact symptoms and improve quality of life.
